Writing Deeper

One of the best ways to get your writing deeper is this wonderful exercise. Take one paragraph out of one of your memoir pieces. Now re-write it into the third person. Re-write it again back into the first person. Although this exercise might be time consuming or frustrating to think about two re-writes, it is invaluable to watch how the final re-write gets you to drop so much deeper and dive right into the deep end of what truly mattered in the piece.

I always do this exercise with my writing students. At first they moan and groan. But after the last re-write they are excited to read what they wrote and quite pleased with the results.

Keep the pen moving,

I like simplicity. It makes life more beautiful. But whether life is simple or complicated, I find that when I let my pen free-write what I am thinking, feeling and doing I get a deeper understanding and wisdom of the life I am living. As a licensed clinical social worker of 30 plus years, I use writing with clients to help them center their lives with this valuable tool. Best of all, writing has allowed me to find my creative muse which I use in every area of my life.
